Food waste, food miles

We had a celebration at work today with free lunch. I packed up a small fraction of the extra food for afternoon snack and lunch or snack tomorrow. Most of the extra food got thrown away. What a waste.

For those concerned about food miles and how much fuel usage and carbon emissions goes into the food you eat, consider this. The most energy efficient food you'll ever eat is what's already in the building and will otherwise be thrown away.

Amen to that. When that happened at my office, I would either 1) email the department about the leftovers (and they would descend on it like pirhannas, those hungry engineers) or 2) lurk around after hours and take off with the whole catering pan of food, bring it home, divide it up into single servings, and put it in the freezer.

Another cheapo thing I'd do: when I'd arrive at the office in the morning, I'd check whether there were large groups of visitors in suits in the lobby. Because "groups in suits" = "catered client lunch" = "leftovers" = "don't need to buy my lunch today". Ha ha!

So true! I know at my work, there is so much food wasted. Luckily, some departments do as blue yonder mentioned (email everyone about the leftovers) and that does help with a lot of it.
